Amazing Thailand

Amazing Thailand

Visited on Saturday, November 15th with Jake, Allison, and Justin

Outside Amazing Thailand

Erin's Review
After a long day being a photo assistant at a wedding with Kate, I was absolutely exhausted. I was originally supposed to go out somewhere in St. Paul with Kate that night, but she ended up having to go work at her "real" job. Ben texted me during the day to ask if I wanted to go out to dinner and we decided on Broders. Unfortunately, the wait was longer than we could handle. Maybe someday we'll get there... Ben then suggested Amazing Thailand which sounded just fine to me. I basically just wanted some noodles in any form.

We got there a little early and had to wait a few minutes for our table to be ready. As soon as we were seated I ordered the Jalapeno Cream Cheese Wontons because I was starving. Half of the table had decided on Pad Thai in some form for the entree. Too bad for us when someone (Allison I think?) asked if it was good and the server flat out said no. Hmmm... we quickly went about changing our order. The server said that the Pad Thai is made in a different style than most people are used to so a lot of people don't like it. Has anyone out there tried the Pad Thai at Amazing Thailand? Is it really that bad?? Since our server was so full of opinions, I asked her what she would recommend and told her I had originally wanted Pad Thai and was just looking for some comfort food. She told me to get the Pad See Iew. So I did. Jake did as well. Allison got the Spicy Noodles and Justin got the largest plate of yellow curry fried rice that I have ever seen.

Yellow Curry Fried Rice
For real. Who could eat this in one sitting??

The wontons came out soon after we ordered and were quickly devoured. They were excellent, although one that I had didn't actually have jalapenos in it. I was only slightly bitter about that.

Jalapeno Cream Cheese Wontons

My Pad See Iew was exactly what I wanted. A large plate of delicious noodles, veggies, and chicken, and egg. Pretty close to Pad Thai... I think thicker noodles might be the difference. I loved this and will probably order it instead of Pad Thai when I'm in the noodle mood at a Thai place again. Everyone else loved their meals, except for Allison. I think she just was wanting something different though, it wasn't that her meal was prepared badly. She did enjoy her cinnomon cookie martini though, so all was not lost for her.

I really enjoyed Amazing Thailand. It was full and bustling and the decor was interesting. I would go back... but probably won't for awhile due to the abundance of other Thai places on the list.

Ben's Review
After watching the Gophers lose horribly to the Badgers on Saturday we decided to get some dinner with Jake, Allison, and Justin. Jake and Allison live close to Broders so we were going to try to go there but we couldn't get in :( After driving back to Saint Paul to pick up Erin (who was locked out of the house), we settled for hitting up one of the many Thai places we have on the list now, from all the suggestions we got from the poll, Amazing Thailand in uptown.

There was no way in hell I was paying $13.50 to park again (I'll stop bitching about that soon I promise), so I dropped Erin off at the restaurant and drove around the block to find a spot on the street, which I did a block and a half away. Nice. Jake, Allison, and Justin also found a spot on the street not far from me.

As I walked into the restaurant I immediately noticed the cool Thai-looking decor. I don't know if the decorations were ACTUALLY Thai, but it fit the stereotype of Thailand, with gold shrines straight out of an "Indiana Jones" movie. The bar is big and full of people, it looked like a good place to hang out. The bar is square with one side being a wall and then three sides are the actual bar with a big island in the middle where all of the booze is stored.

We got seated (sat?) about five minutes after arriving as we were a little early for our reservation. I was, as usual, stumped about what to get. I recently got on a curry kick, making some Indian curry a couple weeks back and really wanting some Thai curry over rice. With a menu as big as the one at Amazing Thailand though, that seems a little bland. Although, Erin's dad will tell you that you should "get a burger when you're at a burger place", and I figure any Thai place is a "curry place." Luckily the special that night was a pumpkin curry that was served in a little pumpkin with the rice on the side that Erin convinced me to get. As usual, good advice on her part.

Menu

The curry was indeed served in a small pumpkin that I thought looked more like a squash. They initially forgot my rice side, so I was confused for a minute about what was going on, but we got it sorted out. The curry was excellent and just what I had been craving - a very runny curry with some chicken and veggies over rice. When you order your dish they ask how spicy you want it on a scale of 1-5. In typical indecisive fashion I went right down the middle with a 3. Our server told us that the numbers were "Minnesota numbers" as opposed to "Thai numbers", saying that the cooks used to make it even more spicy but they got too many complaints. A 3 was a good mix of spice while still having good flavor.

I thought our server was pretty cool, she even did some snooping on a table near us to see what they had ordered because it looked good. However, she steered Allison away from the pad Thai and suggested a different noodle dish instead that Allison didn't really like. Bummer for her :)

One of the best things about Thai restaurants is that you usually have enough to bring home for another meal, which was awesome. All in all, a great meal.
  • Service: Our server was great and they kept our water glasses filled.
  • Food: Excellent pumpkin curry and huge portions.
  • Drinks: Full bar with a decent beer selection. Not sure if they have happy hour specials or not.
  • Ambiance: It was busy on the Saturday night that we were there and the place had a good din.
  • Price: The prices were decent. Our bill was $50 with tax and tip which included a couple drinks and an appetizer.
  • Convenience: This is uptown so parking's a little difficult. Amazing Thailand is across Hennepin from Calhoun Square so if you go south just one block you're in a residential area where you should be able to find a free spot.

Amazing beauty of real paradise. After seeing of these photos I want to travel to Thailand.

Pub in thailand

Regular Stickman reader’s know that these two excerpts are not unusual.1

They are part of the ongoing and constant campaign of bitching and moaning about Thailand, life in Thailand, Thai people, Thai culture, Thai girls, and anything and everything Thai.

bk2_7008

The Stickman message is that Farang are viewed as whales swimming around Thai society waiting to be harpooned.

Any Thai person can incite a mob frenzy at the local cinema and innocent farang standing around will be torn to pieces and Thai traffic police will shoot farang who resist coughing up the customary 200 THB bribe.

I know Ex-Pat culture is about incessant bitching and moaning but is life really that bad for farang in Thailand?

bk2_7007

Can any random Thai person really start yelling for no reason and the next thing you know an angry mob lynching with enthusiastic participation from uninvolved Thai bystanders gets under way?

Do Thai policemen working traffic really threaten to shoot farang who won’t accept a ticket or pay the small customary bribe?

Is the typical Expat’s life really that bad?

And, of course the great unasked question —- would these guys be happy anywhere?

Personally, I think 99% of the problems stem from Expat arrogance and hubris.

When you are in Thailand you are a stranger in a strange land.

Walk around with the attitude that you own the place and you can expect trouble.

Walking around not speaking the language, not observing local custom, and with an attitude and a chip on your shoulder insisting that people conform to your behavioral norms and accept your values is recipe for disaster.

Approach Thailand and Thai society with some humility, take the time to figure out the rules, learn how things work, and show some respect and everything will be copacetic.

At least that has been my experience.

bk2_7009

Thai society isn’t the same as The World, doesn’t work the same way as The World, and conforms to its’ own peculiar set of rules.

Rather than being a problem that is the primary reason I come to Thailand.

Anyway, I’ll open this up for discussion.

Notes:
1. The fact that Stickman gets his ideas and subject matter from BigBabyKenny.com is not unusual either. See the BigBabyKenny Korat Coyote Post and Stickman’s The Big Durian and BigBabyKenny.com on Bribing the Police and this week Stickman’s story about the police demanding money from motorcyclists in Bangkok.

Stickman has also piled on the “Off The Reservation Theme” and is copying BigBabyKenny by “Going of The Reservation” and touting the theme of “what do you do after you get burned out on The Reservation?” Wonder where he got that idea?

And Stickman has started using larger higher resolution pictures in his posts. I wonder here he got that idea from ?

Maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on Stickman because he isn’t the only blogger stealing ideas and material from BigBabyKenny.com.

Sideshow Bob of TFS2M.com is now writing about “Going off The Reservation” although he facetiously and quite humorously claims he doesn’t know the term.

  1. Soidog says:

It’s been ages since I’ve read Stick. He is perpetually negative on all things Thai. A lot of farang spend all their time bitching. I think it’s because, as we age, life gets worse and worse. In farangland we just blame it on aging, whereas expats often blame it on LOS: “I’d be happier back in Oz, this wouldn’t happen back in Oz, it’s cleaner there etc.”
I find the cinema story a bit odd. Was this guy there all alone? Because otherwise his date would’ve pitched in and probably would’ve sat next to the Thai girl in any event.
I once emailed Stick that I didn’t believe a reader’s email (a negative tale like this one), and pointed out the reasons why, and he responded courteously but didn’t publish my rebuttal email.

  2. DaffyDuck says:

What was that stickman reader doing go to see a movie alone, by himself?

Everyone knows that, in Thailand, you always take a girl with you to the movies.

Highly dubious story — sounds to me as well that the guy was a troublemaker to start with.

  3. Cosmo-Politan says:

Farang are viewed as whales swimming around Thai society waiting to be harpooned“?? NO, many farangs ARE whales swimming around Thai society waiting to be harpooned!
Approach Thailand and Thai society with some humility, take the time to figure out the rules, learn how things work, and show some respect and everything will be copacetic” – I agree!

  4. Tibeau says:

to DaffyDuck .. been to movies many many times by myself. Never a problem. You don’t always need to take a girl. That is utter nonsense.
And to anyone else… one of the great things about going to the cinema in BKK is how quiet everybody is. Back in the World I stopped going to the movies because of all the talking and chewing noises. Here, everyone is extremely polite.
Therefore, I find this story dubious or a complete one-off. Ignore.

  5. BangkokMilkshakes says:

i dunno about quiet…cellphone usage during the movie seems standard

  6. Katechon says:

” NO, many farangs ARE whales swimming around Thai society waiting to be harpooned!”
It’s an anecdotal evidence only, but the extracts of Dr Cunt’s letters I’ve posted in the “GogoGirls are not cheap thread” point indeed in that direction!.
    *****
BTW, Kenny Baby, why don’t you answer the questions I’ve asked? Is that I polite way to say to me to get lost?
    – Did you or did you not barfined at girl at Slender? If not, where the info you posted about the barfine modus operandi comes from?
    – Is the email of my impersonator the same as mine?
    – How much is the membership of the “Manee G-Club“?

  7. BBK: Well I hope you don’t accuse me of ripping off your ideas because someone submitted a story about Stickman’s sudden change of heart on the Tilac Bar yesterday on Bangkok Diaries. I’m almost positive the Bangkok Diaries post was prior to this one so . . . maybe you took the Stickman questioning idea from us :-) Just kidding.

Seriously, I don’t know if it’s a matter of people stealing ideas in some cases. In some instances it’s obvious someone is stealing an idea. Sometimes something you read inspires you to write something even more detailed or from a completely different perspective. And sometimes, events conspire to give different people inspriration to write things along similar lines. For instance, the post on Bangkok Diaries was inspired out of the same Stickman post that inspired your post. Two different people read the same post and found something that they felt they wanted to share with others. Idea stealing or shared inspiration?

I read the theatre letter too and also found it to be highly dubious. Tibeau, while it’s not required by law that you bring a lady to the movies most people do. Though not incriminating in itself it’s one of those things that starts the mind wondering what he was doing at the movies alone by himself. If someone simply stated that he went to the movies by himself and commented that his seat was too uncomfortable then that’s quite normal. But when combined with all of the other questionable things he says happened it puts more pressure on whether or not the story was true.

For instance, here’s the things I think make the story somewhat questionable:

    1. He’s going alone to see Coco after Channel . . . not exactly a flick guys go to see by themselves. I guess I’ll call this 1b but the name of the movie is Coca Before Chanel so not only did he misspell Chanel but got the name wrong as well. Or perhaps he meant to say Coco Avant Chanel which is the French title but Avant means Before in French, not after.

    2. The submitter then says “I asked them very politely to stop because I couldn’t hear the film. The next time I asked them to shut up after they answered the phone.” Okay, telling someone to “shut up” in Thailand is very rude and if the submitter knows Thai well enough to translate what he claims the Thais were saying later in the letter then he knows he made a major social faux pas yet he doesn’t draw any attention to it by saying something like “Okay, I know that was a bit rude of me but . . .” He acts as if it was totally normal.

    3. He never mentions why he simply didn’t move seats. I know that many theatres have reserved seating but you can’t tell me that Coco after Channel was so packed he couldn’t have moved over a few seats or changed rows so he didn’t have to deal with this.

    4. He says that the boy swapped places with the girl so she was sitting next to him. That seems rather odd. Most Thai guys wouldn’t put the woman between them. If he said it went the other way that when they initially sat down she was next to him but after his complaint the guy sat next to him I would have no problem believing it but the other way around just seems so odd.

    5. As I said in point 1, not a lot of guys go to see this movie alone but on top of that not many people went to go see this movie; period. It’s a niche film. You simply can’t tell me that there were more than 10 people in the theatre. This is Thailand!! The movie is in French with English sub-titles (and I would presume Thai as well). So my previous point about moving seats is well justified. The theatre was probably empty. Why would these Thais specifically choose seats next to someone or why did the submitter pick a seat next to a group of people when the theatre would have been practically empty?

    6. If he was fluent enough in Thai to understand that she said he had groped her and all of the ensuing calls for the dirty farang to leave then he could have easily shouted that she’s a liar and that she’s mad because he told her to shut up on her mobile.

We’re all students of body language and how people react to things. If you’ve just been accused of groping a girl in the theatre do you:

    a) Protest your innocence
    b) Meekly slink out of the theatre

Well, if you’re innocent then Option A is what most normal people would do even in the face of an angry crowd. On the other hand if you did do it then Option B is what most people would do because they feel guilty.

Also, he doesn’t say if the three people sitting next to him were two guys and a girl or two girls and a guy but I find it odd that this lynch mob errupts and the guy(s) the girl is with didn’t respond with any sort of thuggish behavior. As far as I can tell from what the submitter shared the guy(s) just sat there and joined in the chanting. Somehow I don’t buy that one either. If the crowd was going all lynch mob at least one sucker punch would have been thrown by the guy(s).

    7. He goes on to say “I could see one farang was terrified as we left.” Really? First off, what are the chances of another farang being there (persumably by himself) who speaks Thai well enough to understand what was going on? And even if he did wouldn’t the natural reaction be to act disgusted? I know if that whole thing had played out in English I would have given the guy a dirty look and called him a fucking perv as he passed me.

    8. I can hardly believe the entire audience started chanting “get out you dirty foreigner”. No way. I’m not buying it. Thais don’t do the group chanting thing like that. Now, if he said they gang attacked him and beat the crap out of him I would believe that but I really don’t buy the yelling for him to get out.

    9. Again, going back to point 5, exactly how large was this supposed mob? You’re at a movie that didn’t even perform that well in the target markets. In the UK it did a tad over 1 million GBP which was huge for a French language film in the UK but would be considered an absolute failure of any other type of film. So here it is being shown in Thailand and we’re supposed to believe it was a packed theatre? Again, I would be surprised if there were 10 people in the entire theatre. So his claims about a lynch mob when 3 of the 10 people in the audience are sitting next to him and part of the supposed frame job seem very suspicious.

    10. He then claims as he left two girls he passed walking up the aisle screamed as if he had touched them. Again, just how many people were there? And if you just got accured of being a perv would you even walk close enough to the girls supposedly sitting in the aisle seats for it even to be reasonable that you were groping them too?

All in all, this is like all the other expat horror stories you hear where the completely innocent person is somehow a victim of a huge conspiracy.

Where “Farangs” Are Loved

Usually, the natives of a land hate tourists and foreigners … but not in Thailand! This homemade sign on the back of a tuk-tuk in Chiang Mai, Thailand sums it up:

Farang (foreigners) are a precious commodity in traffic-choked Bangkok and throughout the land of smiles. Tuk-tuk drivers depend on tourism for their livelihoods—sightseers willing to shell out a relative fortune for the ride of a lifetime.

But 11 million visitors (and the tuk tuks that cater to them) bring another thing in addition to hard cash to Thailand: traffic!

Thai girls

Asian girls : Asian girls and Thai girls are absolutely fun-loving and delightful and one will not find a girl so charming on this earth as Asian Thai girls. Apart from their charming nature they also have natural beauty, amazingly soft skin, long silky hair and ultra-feminine looks that simply make them irresistible and somehow they are sweet and demure too. Asian girls are very sociable and well-adjustable in all the given condition and they are brought up with the compromising attitude. Their brought-up in warm families and cramped conditions have made them of strong character who are very easy to live-up with. Perhaps the best thing about an Asian girl is her fun-loving nature. If one can adapt to her sense of humour, he will enjoy a more healthy relationship. Sexy Nice Asian Girls at Thailand look forward to hearing from Nice guys.

Hi, I'm Asian girl from Thailand but living in Sweden at this time.
I'm Vietnamese Thai girl because my grandmom come from Vietnam and she moved to live in Thailand.

Russian Girls in Bangkok

YES IT IS TRUE -- THERE ARE PLENTY OF WESTERN GUYS LOOKING FOR THAI GIRLS IN THE REGAL, ROYAL CITY OF BANGKOK, AND PLENTY OF BEAUTIFUL GIRLS DREAMING OF A FARANG BOYFRIEND. I saw it myself, the last time I was there, which was August 2008 -- I saw it with my own eyes. If Thai women are not cute enough for you, however, you can always try dating the Russian women living and working in the great Eastern metropolis. The decline of living standards in the old Soviet Union has pushed women out into the world to find their fortunes (or merely make ends meet); the growth of the Thai economy has drawn some of these girls, mothlike, to the bright lights and infamous bars of Bangkok.

Discussing in detail the history of the Russian mafia in Asia, AsiaPacificMs reports: "In the present second wave of migration to the Far East, it is not only Vietnam which has received a massive influx of Russians. The number of Russian visitors to Thailand has increased from only a few hundred in the late 1980s to 24,000 in 1993, 31,000 the following year and nearly 50,000 in 1995. Entire Russian quarters have sprung up in the beach resort of Pattaya east of Bangkok. Officially, they are "tourists". Most of them are small-scale merchants who buy electronics and textiles in Asia and sell them in Russia for a modest profit. But many remain behind in Thailand to run restaurants which serve borsch, shashlik and, when available, Russian caviar. Some talented young men find jobs as jazz musicians in clubs catering to the Bangkok's affluent, new middle class. Many Russian girls work as entertainers in Bangkok's numerous night clubs, or can be hired as 'escorts'...

"The girls are believed to have come to Asia through networks operated by the Russian mafia..."

For Russian women living and working in Bangkok, the Russian Mafia and the brutality of its business practices are the least of their concerns. There has also arisen in recent years a crackdown by the state on their existence, and Russian women are increasingly being targeted by the police and Thai vice squads.

Bangkok, the sin capital of Asia
Despite the temples and cultural treasures
Bangkok remains a city of sin for many
"Thai cops are no different, of course. Despite the absence of victims, they love to cruise nightlife venues, investigating 'crimes' committed by sexy girls. Interestingly, though, they save their biggest collective hard-on for Russian hookers. The Thai press loves them too - particularly when the arresting officers organise humiliating nude photo sessions. CM2 is famous for it's Russian freelancers so, despite it being owned by an MP from the ruling Thai Rak Thai Party, the cops must have been aching to burst in.

"Their chance came last week when the country's Interior Minister was sacked for failing to tackle the unrest in the Muslim-dominated South. The first action of his replacement, Bhokin Bhalakula, was to order a police raid on CM2 - which has no known terrorist connections.

"The swanky Bangkok nightclub is a popular watering hole for wealthy farang businessmen. Hundreds of respectable middle-aged men were lined-up and piss-tested like common criminals. Waving their Thailand Elite Cards couldn't save them from their politically-motivated ordeal. The views of foreigners don't count for much in the new Thailand.

"A police source said that the club was raided because Russian hookers were reported to be working there. Predictably, the operation failed to unearth any evidence but it did trumpet the new Interior Minister's social order credentials. He won't be able to bask in the cheap publicity for long, though, because more serious events are beginning to unfold.

"Last night, 39 co-ordinated arson attacks set the South ablaze again. National police chief, Gen Sant Sarutanond, was sacked today for failing to prevent them. With the country facing a security crisis, the cops and the Interior Ministry can't seem to keep their eye on the ball. Perhaps they should concentrate on targeting the southern terrorists instead of pretty girls in Bangkok nightclubs."

IF YOU ARE NOT SCARED OF UPSETTING THE RUSSIAN MAFIA OR GETTING BUSTED WITH YOUR PANTS DOWN IN YOUR HOTEL ROOM BY A RAIDING PARTY OF THAI POLICE, YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN MEETING RUSSIAN WOMEN IN BANGKOK. Of course, this is a little bit like going to Italy to eat Mexican food (or eating kebabs in Tokyo). As one tourist has remarked: " I make my holiday to Thailand because I want to have everything genuinely "THAI" all around me. In Paris, I don't go to DisneyLand, or to McDonald or to PitzzaHut, Those aren't French In Rome , I don't like chatting with Thai bar girls , or listening to Madonna songs, those arn't Italian." Another Thai lover, Bobby, claimed: "Although russian girls are really hot (there were plenty of russian barbie dolls hanging in discos in Istanbul), I never took one in Bangkok (only because I'm more in oriental women) and I don't think that Thailand is the place for it..."

But if you do really want to meet and greet Russian babes in Bangkok, some of the places that have been recommended include:

Ambassador Beer Garden: Kloymaie on Russian Girls in BKK wrote: "I was last in Bangkok august and September this year. I meet a lot of wonderful Russian girls at the Ambassador Beer garden...
"But the beer garden is now closed due to constructions of a new hotel at the ground. It's a big shame as the Ambassador Beer garden was a very lovely place to sit down under the sky and enjoy the atmosphere from the street and enjoy a cold beer and a good meal in the heart of Bangkok.

Bed Supper Club

Bed Supper Club: Sukhumvit.
This is the place to shake your booty when you are in Bangkok. I got this story from Zeek Not Geek: "Put the 3 words together and you have BKK hottest and most futuristic club. I know, we have the ciplak version of Bed club in Belissa Row, Penang, but this one is the original one ok. Situated in the Sukhumvit district, which famous for its clubs and bars, Bed Supperclub is considered the most eye catching since the club is shaped like a cylinder. It's a restaurant, gallery and of course your feng tau place, just that it's a high end one. I was there early on Saturday night with resident DJ Josh Ezelle and DJ Emanuelle spinning their specialty techno and house music. It was rather quiet at first but as the night sway its way, more and more people and it was so packed by midnight, it was as if we're at some rave party.
"One thing I noticed, there were very little locals (Thai) or should I say non-existence (except the bar tenders and bouncers la, of course, wtf?!). Lots of foreigner, Japanese, Taiwanese girls giggling snapping photos all the way in front of the DJ deck in their cute dresses.. a few even wore straw hat! Of course there will always be our friends from Middle East who contribute to Thailand's tourism, even Malaysia's too! So we welcome them with open arms.. Apart from being a dance club, Bed Supperclub also serves as a restaurant during the daytime until 10pm. And the restaurant is so unique, there are actually no menu.
"So how do one order their food??
"Well, the menu items are actually painted on the waitresses top. So if you really cant decide what to eat, then its ok to 'virtually scan' through the waitresses huge rack selection of food. Cool isn't it? I bet if we have this in Malaysia, im sure there will be a lot of sexual harassment case reported. But jokes aside, I didn't check out the restaurant looking at the spectrum of street food available anywhere and of course cut cost lar. Entrance to the club is 700THB with 2 drinks. I think the price is reasonable looking at the crowd and ambience this place have to offer. Did I mention that it's a non-smoking club too? Another plus point to give this club a visit the next time you're there..."

CM2 disco: Novotel in the Silom area. See the story above about police crackdowns on Russian women inside the place.

Grace Coffee Shop: Grace Hotel, Sukhumvit Soi 3.

Khao San Road: Banglamphu.
Bangkok's original Golden Mile and backpacker Mecca has a happening party scene attended by attractive folk from all corners of the globe. The last time I was there, which was August 2008, I had an adventure practically everytime I stepped out of my hotel room. The place is literally swarming with freaks, of all colors and creeds. For years I had been intrigued by the Drum and Bass scene on Khao San Road, and finally at last (it was Friday, August 22), I had the chance to check it out. Within 10 minutes of stepping out of my hotel midway down the Golden Mile, I was handed a flyer advertising Drum and Bass at the Immortal Bar. (The joint, located on the second floor of the Bayon Building (website: MySpace site here), apparently also does a pretty mean heavy metal show, although I never got the chance to witness it). You can play pool inside, or you can sit out on the balcony drinking Red Bull and vodka combinations, while watching the lightning lick the skies, and crowds throng the street below. Inside the bar, basslines thunder like a summer storm. I sank a couple of Tiger beers. Apart from the music, there wasn't particularly much happening, so I eventually headed out for a while, ostensibly to explore the surrounding streets, or cross the river in the dark, or something easy like that. As it turns out, I didn't make it past the gates of Khao San Road. I stopped off down at the police station end where I made my first appearance on Khao San Road, way back in 1992, at an Israeli style fellafel stand. While I was there, I got approached by a black African man. He said he was from The Sudan. He bought me a fellafel, all vegeterian as far as I recall, brimming with Middle Eastern texture and flavor. There were a couple of Israeli guys (former soldiers, no doubt) standing around, enjoying the monsoon. I asked the black African guy what he was doing in Thailand. I didn't quite get his reply, but he said that business had forced him to stay in Bangkok a couple of weeks, and he had spent every night of his stay at Khao San Road. Which kind of implied that he liked it here, but then he started confusing me, by denouncing the scene. 'I don't agree with all this drinking,' he said, nodding to the heaving, staggering masses, all the alcohol adverts. 'I don't agree with this materialism, this rudeness, all this sex. You see, the Prophet laid out guidelines of how to live, instructions for how to live. Since it was God who created us, it is only natural, that God should give us the instructions on how to use our physical vehicles. That is something you never got in the Bible, and that is something the Jews never understood either! The Koran is a user manual for the human being."

The scene around us was a hubbub -- a constant coming and going of backpackers, taxis and delivery trucks snaking their way through the scrum, ladies pushing carts stacked with fried chicken and noodles and corn on the cob. There were peddlers from the highlands hawking hammocks made out of synthetic fibres, and stroking wooden frogs with small batons to make strangely froglike croaks. One of the Israeli guys at the stand glared at us, having overheard the reference to the Koran. "People in the west are so materialistic now," the African was saying. "They have lost touch with the important things in life, such as following God's commandments."
"Have you ever drunk alcohol?" I asked him.
"Never, not once. Liquor has never so much as even passed my lips."
Sometime later the subject of September 11 came up, and the Muslim boldly proclaimed: "That was an inside job carried out by Jews and Americans." It should be remembered we were standing at an Israeli fellafel stand at the time, and there were former Israeli soldiers turned backpackers hanging around, no doubt some of them with combat experience. I was in no mood to make enemies or get into a fight, so I decided it was time to ditch this freak. Which was kind of good timing, because he wanted to go back to his hotel anyway. He escorted me as far as the Bayon Building, where I resumed my sinful indulgences. I never got to have my night walk along the river, past the old embankments. Nonetheless, it is always nice to meet someone from a farflung corner of the world... that happens a lot when I am Khao San Road. It is one neat place to hang out.
The next night I was back at the Immortal Bar drinking and enjoying a chaotic set when I met this Thai girl who called herself Far 2 Juicy (her real name being Phar I believe.) She was sitting on a couch with this young, blond English guy. "It is not as if he is my boyfriend or anything," she claimed at one point, but judging by the way they went home together, he surely was. At least until something better came along, I suppose. She seemed to have eyes for me, and it made me think, if I hung out more often in Bangkok in the future, I could get plenty of action there. When I woke up in the morning, I was amazed to find her email address in my pocket, scribbled on a paper pizza plate. Far 2 Juicy @ Hotmail or something like that. And my first immediate thought was: Ring a Ding Ding!

Nightlife in Hua hin

Nightlife in Hua hin

Hua hin beachBy and large, Hua Hin afterdark does not have brassy beer or sexy gogo bars and racy nightlife as on the other side of the Gulf. The superior Huahin and Takiab beaches and Takiap Bay, Suan Son beach and Khao Tao beach, wide open endless stretches of fine powdery white sand, are relatively uncrowded and clean, the pace of life calm and relaxing, an ideal place to travel with the family for their annual holiday. Hua Hin is, actually, the genesis of beach holidays for Thailand. The town used to be the summer capital of Thailand in the days of the monarchy.

Hua hin history

It all started with a hunting trip arranged for the visiting Grand Duke of Russia, a royal visitor to King RamaV's court back at the turn of the century. The hunting party was led by Prince Chakrabhongse, himself a royal student graduated in Imperial Russia. The prince came upon a strech of fabulous beach in Hua Hin, a fishing vilage of Prachuab Khirikhan province, and fell in love with the site. He later returned to build there the first beach villa of Thailand in Hua Hin, short distance from the site discovered during the hunt. King Rama VI then build the first royal summer palace outside Hua Hin, at the site where the deer hunting party saw the beach. His successor, King Rama VII built another one in Hua Hin, naming it Klai Kangwon Palace, which is still in use by the Royal Family.

Hua hin railway stationThereafter, the royalties and the cream of Bangkok society followed suite, building stately beach villas in a row down the shoreline. The Southern railway was extended to Hua Hin in 1922. A stately Railway Hotel was built in the style of the grand hotels of Europe, serving afternoon tea, champagne dinner, with regular garden party and ballroom dancing. Then, the Royal State Railway Golf Course, the first and some say the most beautiful in Thailand, was built on a wooded hill estate across the track from Hua Hin Station. The uphill-downhill fairways lead through thickets of 100-year old trees. Glimpses of the blue sea can be seen from several tee offs. After the transition to democratic system in 1932, Hua Hin faided into near oblivion.

In the post World War II era, after the economy picked up, the beaches on the eastern coast were discovered, first Bang Saen and then Pattaya which attracted Thai and foreing visitors en mass, more for the promises of having the good times on the beach than peaceful relaxation, which started the Pattaya real estate boom up to now. That was a boon for Hua Hin, which in the mean time, discerning investors had quietly developed choice beach properties for upmarket clientele. Luxury condos and five-star hotels like sheraton, hilton, sofitel and evason have gone up along the beach line. Scenic, new 18-hole golf courses made their appearances in the vicinity. All these developments were the start to the continious expansion of Hua Hin to present day.

Now Hua Hin is more popular as ever with Thais and foreign families. Hua Hin has eight 5 star hotels and more 5 star hotels are settling in Royal Hua Hin. Hua Hin has many attractions for travellers. Among others there are many yearly festivals held here like: Chinese new year, Songkran Festival, Loy Kratong, Hua Hin Jazz Festival, Hua Hin & Cha-am Golf Festival and the world famous Hua Hin Kings Cup Elephant Polo Tournament.
